âI wish you would tell me what that dream was about.â Mirela said as they exited the small shoe store just on the outskirts of New Brunswick. She was fully aware they were out of the states now, but she wasnât sure where they were heading at this point. All Mirela knew was that Brom had been extremely odd towards her since they left the hotel.
He refused to carry her at his speed and he wouldnât even look at her. She had to wonder how terrible the dream had been if he wouldnât even talk about it.
It had been Bromâs suggestion to stop at the shoe store just for the purpose of purchasing a comfortable pair of tennis shoes for Mirela. He said that it would make traveling by foot easier for her. She had argued that they didnât need to be traveling by foot but he wouldnât have it. He wouldnât even acknowledge her pleas of reasoning. What had gotten into him?
They walked in silence for the next three miles before Brom spotted a small Inn just ahead. It was a family owned place and Brom explained that it was much safer than the hotel because no vampires could enter unless invited in by the owner, which Mirela already knew.
She followed along behind him, ignoring the ache in her legs as she stood next to the vampire while he knocked at the door. She was a little surprised to see a young man around their age open the door.
âCan I help you?â He asked. His accent was very different from what Mirela was accustomed to hearing. She had to keep reminding herself that they were no longer in America, and most certainly not in the South. She shouldnât have been surprised by the different accent, really. Brom spoke with a very regal sounding accent himself. Why had she never asked him where he was from?
âWeâd like to get a room for the night.â Brom stated as he hugged his arm around Mirela. It felt forced unlike just a few nights ago. It was like he didnât want to touch her, but was doing so for the sake of their charade. It nearly hurt Mirelaâs feelings. How stupid!
âOf course. Please come in.â The boy offered a smile to them before he stepped back, allowing Mirela and Brom to enter the large house before he held out a clipboard. âI just need you to put down some information and Iâll need the cash up front.â
Brom gave him a quizzical expression as he accepted the clipboard.
âI apologize for any inconvenience that may cause. We had some American college students who stayed here last spring and nearly the entire room had to be renovated after their departure.â
âBloody kids.â Brom muttered, shaking his head as he signed his name before tugging out his wallet so he could pay the boy.
âBloody kids, eh?â The boy laughed, taking the cash before he reached for a key. âWell here you go, Mister...Cade? Iâve got you in the fourth room on the left just up the stairs.
